The Biohermeneutics Institute is engaged in three major endeavors: therapy, marketing, and conflict resolution.

Therapy/counseling.  Biohermeneutics’ elaboration of a ten-stage structure of personality has profoundly transformed modern approaches to effecting personality change and recovery from trauma.  The mantra of biohermeneutics that “everything is true” – true, that is, on a certain life-Stage – governs the biohermeneutical praxis of functionalysis. The same event or person has multiple layers of meaning.  Many psychological pathologies are characterized by a jumble of conflicting intuitions and experiences, each with its own unique logic and set of associations.  Patients often seek for a single “correct” lynchpin for their life-history, and may berate themselves for their own oscillation between conflicting logics.
Patients can achieve remarkable clarity by learning to assign each “cathexis” to a particular Stage, and then perceiving these stages in their fundamental historical/phenomenological sequence, and then aligning each cathexis with an appropriate methodology for recovery.  Meanwhile, counselors practicing functionalysis are able to calibrate their therapeutic utterances to the particular life-Stage that a patient may be channeling at any particular moment.  When something is said is just as important as what is said; a patient’s receptivity is paramount.Together, the content and method of functionalysis have achieved remarkable breakthroughs

Marketing.  Biohermeneutics supplies a underlying “code” for the analysis of product positioning and market segments. “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so”: every person, place or thing is apprehended within a matrix of meaning.  Biohermeneutics has the key to that matrix.  Fundamentally, people perceive the world from within a particular mindset.    Stimuli in the world will trigger certain reactions based both on the salient qualities of the object and the default modality of the perceiver.Biohermeneutics brings rigor to the analysis of the fluid relation of perceiver and object.  Despite apparent nebulousness, a perception always stabilizes within one of a range of known modalities.  Control of marketing message is attained through (1) apprehension of the starting-point modalities of the audience and the product itself, (2) manipulation of the features of the “product,” and (3) direct address to and transformation of the audience modality.  Biohermeneutics conducts this analysis based on detailed profiles of the basic perceptual modalities, and in light of extensive past  analyses of major market groups.  In short, biohermeneutics allows an unparalleled degree of precision and predictability to any kind of marketing.

Conflict Resolution.  Biohermeneutics brings an entirely new perspective to inter-personal and inter-cultural conflict.Biohermeneutics interprets those conflicts as essentially evolutionary in nature – as the aches and pains accompanying the process of growth.  Each of the great transitions features a unique axis of conflict, shaped by the two specific life-worlds in tectonic collision with each other.  Knowledge of the basic parameters of these transitions is not a panacea, as each of the transitions must be lived through: the transformations involved are those of basic identity.  But an understanding of the underlying dimensions of the conflict – to the extent such an understanding can be brought to bear -- can influence the path of certain intractable disputes.  For those directly involved in the conflict, greater self-awareness can help mitigate the suffering attendant upon a state of warfare.  For outsiders, the insights of biohermeneutics can delimit the parameters of successful intervention – if any – in the conflict.   This perspective on conflict does imply that one side is more "advanced," evolution-wise, than another.  But the transition to the "higher" stage may be well or poorly undertaken.  If poorly, the evolutionary transition remains essentially unaccomplished.  With regard to the major transitions, evolution requires thoroughgoing change.
